Somaliland: remand prisoner dies in prison

HARGEISA- Abdirahman Abdilah Hersi, 64, died on 19th May at Hargeisa Central Prison where he was remanded since June last year. His death was confirmed by the State Minister of Justice.
Hersi was among number of people accused of terrorism related offences. Their case has been pending at the regional court which was hearing the case in the prison compound for security reasons.
Hersi was diabetic and his family said he was refused to be hospitalized after he asked.
The Minister denied and said there was no neglect.
Human rights organizations complain about prolonged remand periods in Somaliland.
