HARGEISA- The police arrested Abdilahi Ahmed Damur, a member of the leadership committee of Waddani, the opposition party. He was arrested Saturday from Hargeisa regional court where he was attending a hearing of a criminal case against two members of his party.

The arrest of Abdilahi makes the number of opposition members in detention three. Mohamed Siddiq Dhame, Youth Wing Leader, and Yonis Ahmed Yonis, Secretary of Sports, appeared in court yesterday to face charges. Arrested on 11th April, they are charged of inciting to disobey laws and circulation of false news.

During the arrest of Abdilahi, the Youth Wing Secretary General, Abdifatah Saed, sustained injuries after he has been beaten up by the police. He was hospitalized for the injuries.

The chairman of Waddani condemned the detention and the beating.

The spokesperson of the Police, Faisal Heis, said they arrested Abdilahi after he threatened a police officer at the court. "The Waddani members at the court hearing were prepared to disturb the public order,” he added.

A presidential election is scheduled to happen November 2017. Distribution of voter registration cards started on 28th April.
