HARGEISA- The Minister of Religious Affairs said the government decided to halt a construction of a Catholic church in Hargeisa. The decision of the government conflicts an earlier position in which the Minister expressed early this week where he said the construction of the Church is permitted by the government.
Religious leaders and other people started to oppose the construction of the Catholic Church which was destroyed during the war in the 1980s.
The news came after Mariane Vecchione said she came into Somaliland to reconstruct the church. Her remarks attracted huge outcry from Islamic religious leaders.
The Catholic Church has not been used since 1991 war with Siad Barre government ended.
The government initially defended the construction and argued that it is not a new one but rather a church that has been in Somaliland in decades.
Local people called demonstrations against the construction.
Somaliland is a conservative unrecognized country that has been seeking international acceptance since 1991 when it declared separation from Somalia.
