Hargeisa - President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi "Cirro," held a high-level meeting on Thursday at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa with General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), U.S. Deputy Ambassador Justin Davis, and a large delegation visiting Somaliland on an official mission.

The meeting, described as strategically significant, focused on strengthening cooperation between Somaliland and the United States, particularly in the areas of security, regional stability, and the protection of shared strategic interests in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.

President Cirro briefed the U.S. delegation on Somaliland’s long-standing contribution to peace, democratic governance, and stability in the region. He emphasised Somaliland’s commitment to securing its borders, combating extremist groups, and ensuring the safety of international maritime routes in the Gulf of Aden.

General Anderson noted Somaliland’s crucial geographic position, which he said makes it a key partner in safeguarding the security of the Red Sea and the broader Horn of Africa. He stressed the value of close cooperation between the two sides.

Deputy Ambassador Justin Davis praised Somaliland’s role in maintaining regional peace, maritime security, and democratic governance. He highlighted Somaliland’s disciplined security forces and its stable political environment, noting that Washington views Somaliland as an increasingly important partner.

Davis reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to expanding collaboration in security, strengthening Somaliland’s security institutions, and deepening ties between the two governments.

President Cirro reiterated Somaliland’s readiness to work closely with the U.S. to enhance regional security and to confront emerging threats—particularly those linked to great-power competition in the Red Sea as well as destabilising activities of armed groups in the region.

He also pointed to broader opportunities for partnership, including cooperation in defence, economic development, investment, and essential public services. The President emphasised that Somaliland is a trusted and dependable partner for the United States in one of the most strategically sensitive regions of the Horn of Africa.

President Cirro stressed that U.S. security and strategic interests in East Africa would be strengthened by recognising Somaliland, given its functioning democratic system, professional security forces with more than 30 years of stability, and its central position within America’s regional strategy.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to deepen security cooperation, strengthen joint strategic operations, and collaborate on safeguarding the Red Sea and broader Horn of Africa region. Both sides expressed commitment to building a long-term partnership based on shared interests and sustained cooperation.

After the meeting in Hargeisa, the U.S. delegation led by General Anderson and Deputy Ambassador Davis travelled to Berbera, where they visited the Berbera International Airport, the port, and the coastal city to conduct on-site assessments.
