Hargeisa - Hargeisa is hosting a special cultural moment tonight as the highly anticipated documentary Unrecognised receives its first official public screening at a gala event in the city. The film offers a sweeping and deeply textured exploration of Somaliland, its landscapes, ancient heritage, political evolution, and the remarkable resilience of its people.

Unrecognised, written by Abdirizak Terra and directed by Hussein Boon, stands out as a fully homegrown production created by local journalists and filmmakers. The team has crafted a visually rich and narratively compelling portrayal of Somaliland, shining a light on aspects of the country that often remain unseen by the outside world.

The documentary captures the country’s tourist-loved sites, from dramatic natural formations to historical landmarks that date back thousands of years. It also delves into Somaliland’s long and complex political journey, highlighting its transition toward democratic governance and the grassroots peace-building processes that helped stabilise the region after conflict.

Producers describe the film as a celebration of Somaliland’s beauty, perseverance, and potential, showcasing a place that remains unfamiliar to many but has much to offer visitors, researchers, and investors alike.

Following tonight’s premiere in Hargeisa, the documentary will embark on a wider tour, with planned screenings in other major cities across Somaliland, throughout the Horn of Africa, and later in various locations in the Middle East, Europe and North America.

"Unrecognised” aims to open new conversations about Somaliland, its past, its present, and its aspirations for the future.
