In a decree issued yesterday, 10 December 2025, the President named Cabdirashiid Xasan Mataan as the new Governor of Awdal. Mataan, a prominent politician and former vice-presidential candidate, is one of the most high-profile figures to assume the post in recent years. The appointment is being interpreted as a clear indication of the administration’s heightened focus on Awdal, a region that has experienced violent unrest and political tensions in recent weeks.

Similarly, the President appointed Cabdiqani Maxamuud Caateeye Fariid as the new Governor of Sahil. Fariid previously served as Somaliland’s Minister of Defence, making his selection notable.

·       Proff. Axmed Cabdillaahi Maxamed (Dhegayare), former Governor of Saraar – Governor of Salal

·       Cabdiraxiin Muxummad Axmed, former Governor of Daadmadheedh – Governor of Saraar

The wave of appointments marks the first major administrative restructuring under President Irro’s tenure, following his election on a reform platform earlier this year. Analysts note that placing politically seasoned figures in Awdal and Sahil underscores the administration’s intention to stabilise sensitive regions and reinforce central governance.

It is also expected that the president will reshuffle his cabinet.
