Hargeisa-Some of the employees of Berbera port went on strike today to demonstrate salary cuts proposed by Dubai Ports World which has taken over the management of the port in 1st March 2017.
The police shot at the air to disperse the employees who gathered at the port, according to eye witnesses.
Some of the demonstrators and journalist, who was covering the incident, were arrested by the police.
Dubai Ports World, United Arab Emeritus owned company, took over the port after it concluded a controversial joint venture agreement with the government of Somaliland.
The employees who went on strike accused the company cutting salaries and threatening to employ foreign workers if they do not accept the cutting. Dubai Ports World has not made comments on the accusations.
